Did you know that in elementary school, if a child talks to the school counselor, by law he/she does not have to tell the teachers, let alone the parents? It is sad to think that as a parent I have to get my own daughters permission to speak with the counselor about an incident at school. I know it is needed for cases of abuse and things like that, but obviously this wasn't that. I just wanted to hear the story from an adult, so I could better help my own child (and be sure i got the whole story) and the counselor refused to speak to me. I am so frustrated. I don't like it when the law prevents me from helping my child.

One word...homeschooling! (I was going to be funny and say "two words...home schooling." Yes, it is ridiculous. We ran into something similar at the girls' school (not EXACTLY the same thing)...but Nicole was struggling with a subject, so I asked the teacher if she could bring those assignments home for a while so I could help her and see where her difficulties were. I was told no. They didn't want the parents doing the work for the kids, so the assignments would continue to be done at school, even if she continued to struggle. I was like, "So my child is struggling, is CLEARLY not getting help from the teacher, and you are telling me that as her parent, I am not allowed to help teach her?" We as parents are the PRIMARY educators, caregivers, etc, and the schools want to relegate us to bystanders. Just one of the many dominoes that led us to home education...
Wow...that is insane! I understand the idea of protecting kids from parents that are hurting and bot helping, but closing the doors then on parents that are helping their child makes no sense! How frustrating! I too am voting with Deb!!!! I haven't even jumped on that train full time yet but homeschooling is the way I really want to go!
